PENGUIN NEWS
July 27, 2000
THE CREAM OF THE CROP....
Armchair athletes and weekend warriors? I was happy to be
one last week. Between the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials
in Sacramento and the Tour de France 2000, it was about the most
exciting television week in recent history. If you missed
the television coverage and reports, you can get up to date on the
results of the Olympic Trials at http://www.RunnersWorld.com.
For reports on the Tour, check out http://www.letour.com/2000/us/
AND THE PENGUINS....
And then there's us! We're really pretty impressive. Penguins
are "scrambling" across the US, and not virtually either. Our July
Challenge, the "Scramble Run," started on July 1 at the Golden Gate
Bridge and was to finish at the Statue of Liberty. But on
July 24, the Running Reverend reported that we'd logged 3,816 miles
together. That puts us....where? In the middle of the Atlantic??
Not on your life! Most of us may be slow, but we're consistent.
We're headed BACK across the country--by now we're way past Nebraska,
on our way back to San Francisco!
CHICAGO PENGUIN FLIGHT SCHOOL....
It has the makings of the largest group to attend a PFS yet, probably
due to Sunday's Chicago Tribune feature article about John and the
penguins at the Chicago Distance Classic. If you didn't see
it, you can check it out at:
http://chicagotribune.com/leisure/features/article/0,2669,SAV-0007230190,FF.html
Chicago Penguin Flight School is August 25-27. It will be
held at the Hampton Inn on Higgins Road in Schaumburg, IL. Contact
Karen at [email protected] if you're interested in attending.
John and Karen, as well as Roy Benson, will participate in the program.
Don't forget....PFS alumni and Chicago penguins who live in the
area are invited to join us at PFS for a group run on Sunday morning
too!
CALCULATORS....
Calculating your pace can be frustrating if you're math challenged
like me. How nice, then, to discover a pace calculator on
the http://www.active.com website
(under Calculators.) Plug in the distance and time of your
run and it'll pop back in an instant with the pace you ran.
DID YOU KNOW....
You can subscribe to two free, weekly email newsletters from Runner's
World. They're full of training tips, nutrition research,
motivational quotes, and news stories from the RW website. Subscribe

World Extr@.
THE PENGUIN'S APPEARANCES....
You won't see any penguins waddling in Chicago on August 12.
No, they're gonna shake, rattle and roll...at the Elvis Is Alive
5K. John will be there, but don't look for him to waddle!
The race starts at 6:00pm Saturday evening at Lincoln Park on the
running path north of Fullerton at Cannon Drive. For more
info or a race app, contact Fleet Feet at 312-587-3338.
